I'm trying to learn shorebird ID, and the biggest stumbling block I'm coming up against is that I never see any shorebirds in the field (excepting Killdeer) to practice on.

Any suggestions for shorebird habitat this weekend, particularly Clermont, western Brown, or eastern Hamilton counties?

If you don't find them on the East side, there were some at Lost Bridge Wednesday, along with an Osprey, a Kingfisher, Red-Shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks, Great Egrets, and several GB Herons. I did not see any at Juno or Osprey Lakes at the Oxbow.

Shorebirds can be found at East Fork SP, but usually when the water is low and there is a lot of exposed mud. Because of this I haven't seen many shorebirds there this year. I did have a Least Sandpiper at the S. beach resently and many spotteds around as well as two Solitarys on the CBC bird walk. Odd things like Willets or Buff-breasted Sandpipers turn up at the S. beach every now and then, but they are irregular and you just have to keep checking. Another place to find shorebirds in Brown County is Indian Creek. Again, it depends on the amount of exposed mud. I haven't been to Indian Creek lately so I don't know what the habitat is like right now.

We don't seem to have much good shorebird habitat on the west side of town this season, either, but there are exposed gravel bars here and there on the Great Miami (which is part of the Lost Bridge situation that Allan described, above) which regularly attract shorebirds; not often in great numbers, but regular enough that there's often something to look at. It's not a bad way to study the more common species. Maybe there are some spots along the Little Miami River near you where exposed gravel bars could attract a few yellowlegs, some Pectorals, Leasts, etc.

I swear on MOnday 2/15 during a pretty good snow storm up at the Beechmont Mall Towne Center place, I saw 2 Sea gulls. I shook my head and cleared my eye and they were still there...They were white bodied withe white and gray wings. Still thinking of them today, hoping they found their way...

Gary: We have Ring-billed Gulls here year-round, and mall parking lots are good places to find them in the winter, so I'm certain you did. (See gulls that is, not "seagulls.")

As for shorebirds, what I specifically mean are the long-legged birds like sandpipers, plovers, etc.

The bean fields at Armleder, when flooded, are occasionally a good place for them. I've also seen sandpipers, plovers, and yellowlegs near the north pond and in the shallow swales adjacent to the soccer fields. If you keep a close watch on this board, you'll definitely find out when the shore birds arrive at Armleder.

I have also seen Bass Island on the LMR (at the intersection of Newtown Road and Wooster Pike) totally packed with sandpipers on occasion...

I see...So, I'm glad I got the chance to see the gulls but I did not seagulls. Very cool. They looked very majestic hovering in the snowy blizzard.
