Jay Lehman--are you out there chasing birds? Anyone else trying for the magical 100 number? I give up. Too busy this year.

Hi Debra, I was inspired by Jay to try for 100. Got 69 so far, the BSBO pelagic on Lake Erie helped. I think my feet are doomed to remain cold until the end of January!

Hey Debra, I'm up to 63 species so far, but I haven't really made it much past the borders of Hamilton and Butler counties. I still have a few gaping holes in my list, too. We'll see if I make it up to the lake in the next few weeks.

I'm only at 42, although I've been trying to track down the sighting of the ross' goose more than trying to pump up my list. I'm pretty sure I'll exceed 100 but only because I will be going to singapore at the end of the month. I assume that's cheating right?

John,
If you are going to Singapore and will be there for a little while you may look into trying to get to Panti Forest Reserve just to the north in Malaysia. On a good day it is possible to see 100 species of birds there before lunchtime. I have been there twice and would definitely go back if I am ever in the area. I had one of my favorite birding experiences ever there - watching a group of 21 Rhinoceros Hornbills fly over.

If you have not been to Singapore before there are a number of locations in Singapore proper that are decent.

Let me know if you need any more info.

I forgot to include this link about a visit to Panti by Charlie Moores. Part way through there is a link to a site with photos from Panti.

I'm going for 100 as well. So far I'm at 53 but I'm missing many regulars. My first birds of the year were Sandhill Cranes out my back window on January 1. It's been a very good year so far.

Bill,
Well I had been focusing just on the locations in singapore like Sungei Buloh, Burkit Timah, the central forests and maybe the island of Pulau Ubin. How long did it take you to get from singapore up to Panti? And what mode of transport did you take? I won't have a rental car, and I'm not sure if the taxi outside my hotel is willing to drive that far north into Malaysia. It does look like an amazing place though.

I have used a Singapore based guide in the past (5+ years ago) by the name of Subaraj Rajathurai to go to Panti as well as the other locations you mentioned. His price ($300 USD per day, as I recall) included a car and driver. He is excellent. I don't know his current status, but the last email I have for him is: serin@swiftech.com.sg

John, I googled Subaraj and he still seems to be doing his eco-tourism gig using the same email. The drive to Panti is about 2-3 hours. Feel free to call me at 702-3451 (cell) or 829-2118 (home) if you have any questions

John,
I think it would be tough to get there without a car. Your best bet would be to look into whether any local nature or photography groups from Singapore might have a visit scheduled or to use a guide like Subaraj who Steve mentioned. Both times I visited Panti I went with Subaraj. He is an excellent birder and very accomplished general naturalist. He is quite interested in education and conservation.

If you have some freedom in choosing your accomodations, there is a hotel right across the street from the botanical gardens. I stayed there on my second visit so that I would have some easy access to a good birding location. The other locations that you mentioned are quite spread out so it was nice to have a place to visit on quick notice. Singapore does have some good birds but many species have been extirpated as a result of habitat loss.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Unfortunately I think Subaraj is out of my price range at the moment, so I think I will just stick to the birding spots on singapore this time, but hopefully next time I'll get to make the excursion to malaysia.

Bill, I staying at the Shangri-la, which while not across the street, is still pretty close to the botanic gardens so I plan on doing a morning bird walk before going in to work on the weekdays.

Have a good time. There is still a lot of good stuff to see in Singapore proper and morning bird walks are a great way to start off the work day. ;)

Answer to Debra'a question: I have birded in Ohio three days, January 1, 2 and 3. I currently have 75 birds on my January list. I will post belated details. This past weekend I was in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas at Benstsen Rio Grande Valley State Park seeking the Bare-throated Tiger Heron. It disappeared for two days, Saturday and Sunday, but was re-found on Monday, January 11. I saw it and got distant photos between 3:00 and 3:30 pm near the Hawk Tower. Now back to Ohio January Century List.

I did it! I managed to see #104 species in Ohio in January and photograph #100 of those species! I spent a lot more time than Jay, 22 days total, a few of which I went out before work or during lunch. I worked Christmas Day and traded weekends, and took vacation days in January. Febuary has been spent working non-stop with lots of overtime to make up for January, but it was well worth it!
