Jay,

I saw in your sightings post that you went to visit Bentsen to see the Bare-throated Tiger Heron. I was wondering how long you think it will stay around? I am going to be going to McAllen in about 8 weeks, but since it is a tropical species, do you think it will stay for the summer?

This bird is a vagrant/wanderer, and has been there since about December 21. It is changing to breeding from immature plumage. Becasue it breeds about 150 miles south of the southern border of Texas, I expect it to leave soon or by spring in south Texas, if it has not already done so. Hope that i am wrong! The last report on TexBirds, was at 3:45 pm on Tuesday, January 12. If you want to keep track of sightings, you can read TexBirds from birdingonthe.net, click on Regional Specialties and scroll down to Texas. There is also an archive site accessible on birdingonthe.net. Hope that this helps.
