I don't live in Indian Hill or Mariemont and would like to be able to go into the Grand Valley area. It makes me jealous every time I read about the eagles and cool water birds being seen in this area.

Try visiting the Camp Dennison Memorial Park, which is directly across from the Waldschmidt House in Camp Dennison. I live in the Miami Woods Condo community in Milford and this area is directly across the river from us. A resident who lives on the "bluff side", which overlooks the Little Miami, has shot some lovely photos of the Bald Eagle. I have a photo she took on Christmas Day, as well as one on the day of the CBC. As far as I know, the public is welcome, unlike Grand Valley (which is not far away).

Come next Saturday the 23rd with the bird club and you will see it is not necessary to go into the gravel pits to see these birds. Check the calender for details. Bob

I have birded from inside (as a guest of a passholder) and outside of the gravel pits at Camp Dennison. My bird counts from the community park and from scoping the ponds from the road side exceed my counts from inside the park. Going inside subjects you to loose dogs and loud non-birders, plus you lose the advantage of a wider field of view. Scoping from the edges gets you many more ducks when you can see them from above.

Cast off your IH/CD envy - edge birding is where it's at!
