As of Feb.9 the west exit of Muscatatuck will be closed to vehicular traffic. This will stop local traffic from using the refuge as a shortcut and increase the safety of the animals and people using the refuge. The north exit to R. 50 will remain open and will be the only exit from the refuge. This move should not impact the Cincinnati birders much since for the most part we tend to use the north exit anyway. This change is part of series of changes planned for the refuge.

Spent several hours at Muscatatuck today looking for River Otters. Found 3 in the large lake South of the road leading to 31. Also of interest was a flock of 11 Greater White-fronted Geese in the same lake and 2 Trumpeter Swans in the back of Richart Lake. Several Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks, along with a Northern Harrier. Pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nsxbirder/sets/72157617985987487/
