I emphatically recommend iBird Plus or iBird Pro. Both of them have replaced my field guide when I go on walks. Both apps allow you to view every bird as an illustration or you can view actual photos. It provides range maps and allows you to hear their calls. What I like is that you can have the app recommend birds that are similar in appearance and call to the bird you are viewing - extremely helpful.

The difference between the two apps is that the Pro version allows you to search with a greater range of criteria. I just upgraded to Pro from Plus, but I used plus happily since June, 2009. iBird Plus is $20 and the Pro is another $10 on top of that as an upgrade.

Oh, I forgot, I also use the favorites capability to flag the birds on my life list and make a note of the date and place in the note sections provided within the app for each bird.

Good hunting,

Matt
