I will be in Miami for a few days in early March to birdwatch and sight-see. I plan to visit the Everglades and I have downloaded the South Florida Birding trail guide.

Does anyone have much experience with this area? Do you have any suggestions on where I might go?

Thank you in advance,

Matt

Matt,

I would recommend that you get "A Birder's Guide to Florida" from ABA sales. 800-634-7736. The Everglades is excellent. In Miami, try Greynolds Park plus the suburbs directly south of Miami Airport for countable exotics like Red-whiskered Bulbul or Spot-breasted Oriole. If you have time to go north, try Locahatchee NWR and a man-made wetland/sewage treatment plant near Ft. Lauderdale whose name I don't recall but is probably on the trail map (starts with a W). If you want to hire a birding guide, google Larry Manfredi.

The wetland I referred to above is called the Wakodahatchee Wetland. It is on Jog road in Palm Beach county (so probably closer to Palm Beach than Ft. Lauderdale) and could easily be combined with a visit to Loxahatchee NWR.

I second the recommendation on the Wakodahatchee visit if you have time to make the trip north.

Thank you both for the recommendations. I have two days to spend on whatever I want (8am-4pm). I will plan one day for the Everglades and then one day to migrate North to catch this wetland and several parks in between.

Thanks again for the guidance.

Green Cay is a wetland less than a mile from Wakodahatchee with a boardwalk that runs through it. I spent 2 days in mid-September at both spots. Do a search on Flick'r before you leave to see what's being observed. People are there daily posting images. Enjoy.
