In contrast to the past 35 winters, I have seen ZERO Juncos here on Nine Mile Road (near Woodland Mount Park) this year (tho I have seen them in low numbers elsewhere). I am curious whether it is a general phenomenon, or a striking example of micro-ecosystem variation. I am sure they must be around, but wonder if anyone knows the specifics of Junco migration, and whether they have a small repeated territory during winter residence.

Hi David, My feeling is that junco numbers are about normal here in Williamsburg. I haven't dug into my notes yet to prove this but I did look at ebird data for all of Ohio last Jan/Feb and this Jan/Feb. Again this was a very quick look and I didn't have much time to analyze the results, but it looks like junco sightings for Ohio are slightly down, but not a significant amount. You can explore the ebird data at ebird.org.

We generally have a few to a dozen a more in our yard and feeder each winter - no exception this year. With the additional snow, they have been more active around the feeders (but have had to compete with a few tree sparrows and more song sparrows).

They seem to be down in general, but on a visit to Spring Grove during January, I saw a flock of 35-40 of them.

Although I don't have accurate records, my gut feeling is that I am seeing the usual number of juncos at my home feeders. I couldn't comment on numbers in the field.
