Joined three other birders for the CNC bird hike in the snow this morning. No unusual sightings, but we did see some unusual mockingbird behavior: watched a mockingbird eating sunflower seed from the feeders. Not just a little bit - he was there all morning long.

Definitely a first for me. Has anyone else seen this? My theory is that it is driven by all the snow cover and by the fact that most of the berries must be gone this late in the winter. Still, this is very odd. Any thoughts?

Josh,
I have been watching a Mockingbird at our feeders all afternoon. Most of the time he seems to be eating sunflower seed off the ground, but I did observe him eating from the suet feeder. The suet has flecks of carrot and maybe berries mixed in, and I suppose some insects might possibly be in the seed on the ground. I have not observed him perched on the feeder with the black oil sunflower seed, however.

I have had them eat sunflower seed from my feeder here in Milford.
