CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS
The National Audubon Society sponsors Christmas bird counts each year as a way to monitor winter bird populations. This year, we invite young birders to help adults in the field. OYBC Annual meeting will be held at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. For details visit the Ohio Young Birders website.
WEEKEND BIRDING BLITZ
All ages with an interest in birds, bats, bugs and more are welome! Total cost includes camping and meals $10.00 per registration; or $25 for 3 or more. Rooms available for additional cost at the State Park Lodge. Saturday activities will take place at the Hueston Room. The Hueston Room is attached to the Park Offices. It is just across the parking lot from the Nature Center
Camping at Group Camp #2 Friday night-Sunday morning
- 8:00 am-10:00. Registration and breakfast at Hueston Room.
- Field trips to lake and woods and/or bird banding with Dave and Jill Russell
- Noon lunch at Hueston Room
- 1:00 pm. Bird of Prey program by park naturalist and visit to park raptor center.
- 3:00 Bird ID - Dave Russell
- 5:00 BBQ Banquet-Hueston Room.
- 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Keynote speaker Dr. Herman Mays, PhD,
Curator of Zoology, Cincinnati Museum Center. Dr. Mays is an evolutionary biologist with a primary emphasis on bird. Bird skinning (museum speciman preparation like stuffing a turkey!) demonstration with Dr. Mays and Museum Center staff
- 8:00 "Bats & Bonfire" - netting for bats. Get up close to these magnificent mammals and learn about the variety of bats in Ohio
- Black lighting for bugs, moths and other critters of the night
- 7:00 am breakfast/break camp
- 8:00 - 10:30 Sparrow Workshop and Banding with Dave Russell of AREI, Inc. at Miami Whitewater Wetlands. Meet at Baughman Road. View Map & Directions.
- 11:00 Trip to Oxbow Lake with Jon Seymor, President of Oxbow, Inc. Learn the history of the Oxbow, with a field trip to look for ducks and early winter residents
- Noon Lunch at nearby restaurant-farewells
Hueston Woods State Park, located in Butler and Preble counties, is nearly 3,000 acres of natural resources for outdoor recreation. The park surrounds Acton Lake, with campsites, cabins, and a resort lodge to entice the overnight visitor. Map of Hueston Woods.
